Recognising exceptional individuals in Herefordshire through the Honours system

Anyone can nominate an individual for an honour. There are many unsung and unrewarded individuals who make a difference to the lives of others. However, they need someone to nominate them. Please consider whether you know of someone who should be recognised and, if appropriate, nominate them.

People receive honours for achievements such as:

• Making a difference to their community or field of work
• Enhancing Britain’s reputation
• Long-term voluntary service
• Innovation and entrepreneurship
• Changing things, with an emphasis on achievement
• Improving life for people less able to help themselves
• Displaying moral courage

Please bear in mind that only exceptional people will receive an honour and that nominations should be made whilst the nominee is still active. However, it is not necessary to be active on the national stage, many Herefordshire people have received honours for their activities within the county over the past few years.

Whether someone gets an honour – and the type of honour they receive – is decided by an honours committee in London. The committee’s decisions go to the Prime Minister and then to the King, who awards the honour.
