The Herefordshire Language Network is offering training for potential interpreters

The Herefordshire Language Network is the council’s in-house language agency providing face-to-face, video and telephone interpreting, as well as text translation.  The service provides interpreters for 500+ assignments every month for public services, schools and voluntary organisations, in more than 40 different languages.

We are always looking for new interpreters to join the Network. If you have a high standard of verbal fluency in English and one other language, and are interested in being an interpreter we are providing a training course in October so you can find out more about what it involves.

The Foundation Training for Interpreters course is taking place in Hereford over two consecutive Saturdays, on 5 and 12 October 2024, 9am to 5pm.

The course is an unaccredited, 14-hour introduction to interpreting techniques, and is an excellent starting point for anyone who has ever considered interpreting. Once you’ve completed the training it could lead to paid work in the county.

The course costs just £30. All languages are welcome, however we would be especially pleased to hear from people who speak Arabic, Lithuanian, Tamil, Dari, Thai and Bengali.

The deadline for applications is 20 September 2024.

Interpreter Training

A fulfilling experience

Igor attended the Foundation Training for Interpreters course earlier this year, and is now active as an interpreter alongside his other work.

Igor, who has lived in the UK for most of his life and now lives in Hereford, explains:

“My first language is Ukrainian. I thought it would be good to support people to access local services by being an interpreter.  So far I’ve done interpreting for the hospital, dentists, and schools.  It is really fulfilling being able to put my language skills to good use, and I’ve been able to earn some extra money at the same time.”
