Overhanging trees and hedges on a public footpath
If a tree or hedge overhangs a public footpath, the landowner is responsible for cutting it back. This is to ensure the safe use of the path.
If the council agrees that the hedge or tree is causing a problem we can insist that the owner cuts it back. You can also report dangerous or dead trees on public land.
When a tree or hedge should be cut back
The tree or hedge should be cut back if it:
- Interferes with the safe use of the path
- Blocks the view at a road junction
- Obstructs a street light, traffic lights, or street signs
- Is a danger to the highway
