Herefordshire and Worcestershire joint waste strategy

Herefordshire Council has a joint strategy with partnership councils in Worcestershire to plan how we manage waste now and in the future.

Our key objectives are to:

View waste as a resource and minimise the impact that waste management activities have on climate change
Follow the waste hierarchy and promote waste prevention to reduce the amount of waste we produce
Minimise landfill as a means of final disposal of waste produced through improving opportunities for re-use, recycling and recovering energy from waste
Deliver value for money by having joined up services that provide best value and cost benefits to partnership councils and customers

Waste hierarchy

The waste hierarchy aims to deal with waste in the most sustainable way possible first - by preventing waste from occurring. Where prevention is not possible - the strategy is to reuse, recycle or compost it. Finally, if this cannot be done, we aim to dispose of it either by recovering the existing energy (such as incineration, gasification or anaerobic digestion) or disposing of it in landfill. Managing waste using this model reduces waste and its environmental impact.
