Who is legally homeless

If you do not have accommodation that you have a legal right to occupy and that would be deemed as reasonable for occupation, then you may fall into the category of being homeless.

This includes: sleeping rough, sofa surfing, temporarily staying with friends or family, sleeping in a vehicle and many other possibilities.

You can ask us for homeless help if you are:

  • Homeless now
  • At risk of losing your home in the next 8 weeks
  • Unsafe because of domestic abuse or other violence
  • Living in very bad housing conditions. This could include overcrowding, serious damp or disrepair

If you believe that you're threatened with homelessness then you do not need to wait until you are homeless before making contact with us and seeking assistance. The earlier you get in touch with us, the better chance we will have to assist or advise on resolving your situation and prevent you from becoming homeless.

You can find out more about homelessness situations on the Shelter website.

Some people have a legal priority need for housing. You can see our list of priority needs for housing.
