Beryl and scheme partners Herefordshire Council are celebrating a significant milestone for the city’s shared bikes and e-bikes.

The scheme has now clocked up 750,000km - the equivalent of more than 18 journeys around the Earth - and is now heading towards the big 1m landmark.

More than 316,000 journeys have been made on the city’s vehicles since the scheme first launched in July 2019, meaning the average distance is 2.37km.

Feedback from users in Hereford reveals that, on average, almost a third of these journeys have replaced road transport journeys, including driving or being a passenger in a car, van, taxi or motorbike.

According to industry calculations, replacing those 260,000+ road transport journeys has prevented more than 38 tonnes of harmful carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere.

Beryl CEO and co-founder, Phil Ellis, said: “We know from speaking directly to our users that Hereford is one of the most sustainably aware areas in which we operate, with almost a fifth of them citing environmental concerns as a key reason for first deciding to use bike share.

“I’m delighted that we’ve reached this milestone which not only reinforces the popularity of the scheme but adds as a reminder of the significant positive impact it has on both traffic congestion and air quality.

“It's also worth remembering that our bikes and e-bikes are also incredibly simple and fun to use, making them a great way to stay active and boost your mental and physical health.

“They can also save you money compared to private vehicle ownership, removing the financial burdens of fuel, tax, MOT, insurance, storage and maintenance.”
