School artwork competition winners celebrated at awards event

Some of Herefordshire’s best young artists have been honoured for their creative talents after scooping the top prizes in a special competition run by Herefordshire Council.

The talented children were the winners of the ‘My Herefordshire’ artwork competition, open to local schools and nurseries across Herefordshire earlier this year.

The competition gave young people the chance to showcase their artistic skills by expressing what they like best about living in the county.

A panel of council judges had the difficult task of narrowing down the eye-catching artwork to 10 winners, who received their prizes at a presentation event on 17 July at the council’s Plough Lane offices.

The winners came from five schools, St Joseph’s Primary School, Trinity Primary School, Steiner Academy Hereford, Walford Primary School, and Ashfield Park Primary School. Each of the winners were presented with book tokens, a printed canvas of their artwork and a signed certificate.

The prizes were awarded by Cllr Jonathan Lester, Herefordshire Council’s Leader, Cllr Ivan Powell, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People and Darryl Freeman, Director of Children and Young People.

Copies of the artwork will be hung on the walls of the Plough Lane offices for staff and visitors to enjoy.

Councillor Jonathan Lester, Leader of Herefordshire Council, said:

“I was delighted to attend the presentation event and meet the worthy young winners. It’s great to see what really matters to our local children through their art.”

Councillor Ivan Powell, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, added:

“I would like to thank all of the schools and pupils who took part in the ‘My Herefordshire’ competition. We had so many brilliant entries and we were amazed by the high standard of the artwork. It really was difficult to pick out those who should receive prizes.”

Darryl Freeman, Herefordshire Council’s Director of Children and Young People and the competition’s head judge, said:

“The competition has been a fantastic success and it gave us the chance to see how artistically talented our young people are in Herefordshire. Well done to all of our winners.”
