The exciting redevelopment of the museum and art gallery in Hereford has taken another step forward, with planning permission and listed building consent granted for the Broad Street building
Plans to renovate the museum and art gallery in Hereford to provide purpose-designed museum space, galleries, education facilities and a café have been approved by the council’s Planning and Regulatory Services Committee today (Wednesday 17 July).
The redevelopment, which has been funded by Stronger Hereford, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Arts Council, includes fully refurbishing the Grade II listed building and adding a new fifth floor. The historic façade of the building onto Broad Street will remain untouched, preserving the streetscape within the Hereford Conservation Area and Area of Archaeological Importance.
The redeveloped museum and art gallery will offer visitors an exciting interactive experience, showcasing amazing collections such as the Herefordshire Hoard and a varied programme of activities, events and exhibitions.
The building, which will be accessible and energy efficient, will be topped by a roof terrace and cafe, offering breath-taking 360-degree views of the city and surrounding Herefordshire landscape.
Cllr Bramer, Cabinet Member for Community services and Assets, said: “We have worked closely with a number of external agencies over many months to ensure our proposed plans preserve the historic fabric of the building while providing purpose-built exhibition and display space. We are delighted to secure the required planning permission which means we can now start to progress work to turn our proposals and plans for a modern museum and art gallery into reality.”
