Progress is continuing as part of the vital repair and strengthening works on the Bartestree Culvert.

The works began on 22 July and aim to increase the life span and load carrying capacity of the culvert, which supports the A438 between Hagley and Dormington.

The existing culvert is a single span red brick arch structure, and surveys revealed damage to the culvert walls, with displaced masonry and evidence of mortar loss. Inspections also found some separation of the stonework in the barrel of the bridge.

During the first weeks of the works, teams have been preparing the site, which has included light vegetation clearance in the embankments, installation of scaffolding to provide a walkway for public and works teams to use. The works have also involved excavation of the carriageway to expose the arch barrel, using a balanced digging technique to protect the integrity of the structure.

Over the coming weeks, repairs will be carried out to the barrel separation issues and wall, and the culvert will be strengthened with concrete layers before we reinstate the carriageway.

Cllr Barry Durkin, Cabinet Member Roads and Regulatory Services, said: “Works are progressing well on the A438 and the scope of the scheme is now clearly visible. The works, which are absolutely necessary to maintain the safety and integrity of the road surface and bridge structure, are on track and still due to be completed by the end of August. I would like to offer my thanks to local people and road users for their continued patience and understanding.”

The road remains closed to vehicles, but access for pedestrians is available at all times, and marshals are on site during the works to assist with any queries regarding access.

The fully signed diversion route remains via the A417/ A4103/ A465/ A438 Folly Lane and vice versa.
