New campaign encouraging people to take their litter home with them when there isn’t a bin within easy access
Herefordshire Council is calling on people to be aware of the importance of proper litter disposal, and where there is not a bin available nearby, to take litter home with them and bin it there.
Litter collection and disposal costs the county over £1million every year, with particular problem areas including road verges, laybys, highways and footways, where people will often stop to eat or drink and discard their litter.
Cllr Barry Durkin, Cabinet Member Roads and Regulatory Services, said: “Litter is a very serious issue in the county, costing millions and involving thousands of hours of time to clean up. As well as our teams of street cleansers, a network of hard working picking groups and individuals contribute to the effort to keep our county clean.
“The truth is that each one of us has a responsibility to use our ‘bintuition’ and dispose of our waste correctly. If this is not possible immediately, we implore people to please take their litter with them and either use the next bin they find, or take it home and bin it there.”
There are around 1,400 litter bins across Herefordshire, and we empty all of them regularly, but sometimes they can fill up before we get to them. Local people are please encouraged to let us know if they see a full or damaged litter bin by calling us 01432 261800 or reporting a full or damaged litter bin online.
The council’s Community Protection Team is hard at work investigating unlawful waste disposal and fly-tipping cases. If fly tipping is suspected, this can be reported at www.herefordshire.gov.uk/reportingapp/ or by calling 01432 261761.
Residents can also get actively involved by joining a litter picking group. These groups work tirelessly alongside the Council in keeping our county clean and beautiful. People can find their local litter picking group on our website.
Cllr Durkin added: “Tackling litter is a matter for everybody. By ensuring we dispose of our litter properly, we can all help to protect and enhance our environment and ensure that Herefordshire remains a great place to live and visit.”
