Herefordshire Museum Service are seeking people with lived experience of disability and neurodiversity to participate in a ground-breaking initiative to test and develop multi-sensory museum experience.
Working collaboratively with the museum team, participants will use their lived experience and expertise with a view to making Herefordshire Museum Service’s museums more accessible for all visitors.
As part of the recruitment process, the Museum Service is hosting three taster sessions designed to introduce potential participants to the project. It will allow them to get hands-on with museum objects, discuss accessibility, and explore whether the project is the right fit for them. There will also be an optional tour of the museum’s store.
The taster days are being held on:
- Monday 23 September: 2pm – 3:30pm
- Thursday 26 September: 6pm – 7pm
- Saturday 28 September: 10:30am – 12:30pm
Support workers and carers are welcome to attend alongside participants, and parking is available at the Museum Resource & Learning Centre as well as at the nearby Military Club car park.
Damian Etheraads, Museum and Art Gallery Lead, said: “We’re really excited to offer this opportunity to D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent individuals who are passionate about museums and making them accessible to everyone. By working with people who have first-hand experience, we hope to create a museum environment that is more engaging and welcoming for all visitors”
The Sensational Museum project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and is supported by a range of universities and industry partners. The project is dedicated to revolutionising the accessibility of museums by reshaping the role of senses in museum experiences.
