Winter emergency accommodation for homeless individuals is now open in Hereford.

Herefordshire Council is once again partnering with CCP (Caring for Communities and People) to deliver the Winter Night Shelter, providing vital accommodation for people from across Herefordshire who would otherwise be sleeping rough.

Starting today (2 December 2024), the emergency accommodation will be available from 8pm to 8am, providing support for both men and women who are currently sleeping rough in the county.

The shelter offers a communal space with a new partitioned area which has been created to provide women with a safe and private space.

Herefordshire Council’s Rough Sleeper Outreach Team will be working with a wide variety of partners to ensure that appropriate support is arranged for people who access the shelter.

Councillor Carole Gandy, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said:

“The Winter Night Shelter is a lifeline for those in our community facing the harsh realities of rough sleeping during the colder months. By providing a safe, warm, and welcoming space, we’re not just offering shelter—we’re offering support and a pathway to brighter opportunities.

“This vital service reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring everyone in Herefordshire has access to the support they need. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those most in need this winter.”

The Winter Night Shelter is a part of the local strategy to prevent rough sleeping where possible, but where it cannot be prevented – to ensure that it is rare, brief and non-recurring.
