National Pothole Day is an annual reminder of the impact potholes can have on local residents and the important role that targeted investment plays in tackling this scourge on our county.
Herefordshire Council and its partner, Balfour Beatty Living Places, are continuing to work together to maintain the county’s highways network – with over 28,000 road defects having been addressed in 2024 and 99% of these within the target time set out in our Highways Maintenance Plan.
Cllr Barry Durkin, Cabinet Member for Roads and Regulatory Services at Herefordshire Council, said: “We are aware of the scourge that potholes can be across our local road network. That is why over the last twelve months we have redoubled our efforts to fix defects on our network as and when they are reported to us. Whilst repairing potholes forms part of our routine maintenance programme, we have also invested over £11million in the last year to resurface our very worst roads and surface dress those that are at risk of significant deterioration in the short to medium term.
“With the Council responsible for over 2,100 miles of network, maintenance can prove a real challenge and I am delighted that this has been reflected in the recent draft capital budget, unanimously supported by Cabinet on Monday, which sees over £11million allocated to further highways investment. We will continue to use this additional funding to prioritise long term investment in the very worst areas.”
All the investment in our highways network is based on data gathered through regular inspections, reports from members of the public and detailed surveys. The best way to help us maintain our roads is to report any defects via our online form or by calling 01432 261 800.
You can also follow our live map which shows defects on Herefordshire roads and pavements which are in the process of being resolved, or which have been completed within the last three months. This can be used to check whether a problem has already been reported before you report a pothole or road defect online, or check the progress of a reported incident.
