Hundreds of secondary school students attended the Herefordshire Skills Show on Thursday 20 March.
The event was organised by Herefordshire Council and hosted by NMITE at their Skylon Park Campus, Hereford.
During the day, the students from year 10 and above, were able to engage with 30 local employers, education and training providers and entrepreneurs. They were provided with the opportunity to access a wide range of information on employment, training opportunities and apprenticeships to help them with their future career choices.
The event also offered a quiet hour for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Young people fed back to us that they found the event helpful at a time when they are considering their training and employment options ready for when they leave school.
A student told us that:
“Speaking to Hereford College was informative, as I originally thought I could only attend the Art College. After speaking to the college I’ve realised that I have a lot more options than I thought I had previously.”
Another student said:
“During the event today I have found work experience opportunities with Herefordshire Council.”
A student also shared with us that:
“I’m very interested in becoming a social worker, and today I have found information on the training routes into a social work career.”

Councillor Ivan Powell, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:
“We would like to thank all the employers and training providers for supporting the Skills Show and to the schools that brought their students to the event. Thanks also to our event sponsor, NMITE Centre for Innovation and Future Skills.
“We hope that the information provided on the day will help our Herefordshire students to make informed decisions on their future career options. Hopefully, they will be encouraged to take up the career opportunities available to them within the county.”
Councillor Graham Biggs, Cabinet Member for Economy and Growth, added:
“The key to future prosperity in Herefordshire is more better paid jobs and we owe it to our young people to create inspirational opportunities. The Herefordshire Skills Show, in one day, helps our businesses with future recruitment and inspires year 10 students as they progress on their journey towards meaningful work. I’d encourage all businesses to make contact and come and join us in the skills show 2026 and to find out more about workforce planning.”
