Six charities have recently received support from the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) on behalf of Hereford Crematorium as part of a metals recycling scheme.
The Crematorium takes part in the metals recycling scheme run by the Institute that means valuable metal items, such as artificial joints, can be recovered during the cremation process and melted down for recycling.
This enables Hereford Crematorium to make annual awards to deserving causes, and recently six charities have received a share of more than £24,000. In October 2024, £11,600 was shared between Teenage Cancer Trust, Child Bereavement UK and Stroke Association. Then, in March 2025, Mentor Link, SUDEP Action and British Liver Trust split a donation of £12,500.
Since the Crematorium first became involved in the scheme, it has contributed a staggering £183,390 to death related charities that support people in Herefordshire.
John Gibbon, Direct Services Manager at Hereford Crematorium said: “We are so grateful for the ICCM’s metal recycling scheme, and the incredible generosity of those who have made the decision to participate. It has enabled us to make donations of more than £183,000 to charities that support local people since we first joined the scheme, which is a remarkable sum.
“It can often be difficult to choose between bids, but we are open to nominations all year round, so we encourage charities to contact us and let us know about the brilliant work they do. Being part of the Metals Recycling Scheme is a true act of charity and kindness, and it is always our hope that enabling support for these charities is of comfort for those who have lost loved ones.”
The metals recycling service is provided at no cost to crematoria who have signed up to the scheme and metals are never recycled without the next of kin’s permission.
The Council accepts nominations all year round, so if you would like to put your charity forward for consideration, please email Hereford Crematorium at bereavement@herefordshire.gov.uk or telephone 01432 383200.
