This watercolour painting, Going Home, was created in 1904 when the artist was seventeen years old. In January 1904 Hatton visited Cornwall where he met some of the artists of the Newlyn School. He becoming aware that the study of other artists and their work was of great value and significance to the development of a painter. This painting, Going Home, in what was Hatton's favourite medium at the time, shows two farm horses, at a brisk trot, on the road home. This is a very fine example of his ability to capture the fluid movements of animals, so typical of Hatton's work. This is a fleeting moment before horses and rider reach the end of the road and disappear beyond the skyline. The warm colours of the corn stooks in the middle ground suggest the end of a good harvest. The artist has used a palette of soft warm colours to suggest a fine evening in late summer. The blue tones in the horses coats and the purpling shadows on the road show that dusk is approaching.
