This pen and ink drawing was created in 1901 when the artist was 14 years old and living in Swansea with Doctor and Mrs Lancaster. The pencil study for this drawing was produced earlier in 1901 and is also a detailed and finished piece of work. This final work, in pen and ink, shows an altered composition. Inspired by Byron's poem, Mazeppa, the artist depicts the army officer who is punished for an illicit love affair by being strapped naked to the back of a wild horse. The artist shows the moment when, the horse and rider, exhausted and near to death are surrounded by the rest of the herd. 'The sun was sinking - still I lay Chained to the chill and stiffening steed, I thought to mingle there our clay, A my dim eyes of death had need.
