This pencil drawing was created in 1901when the artist was 14 years old and living in Swansea with Dr & Mrs Lancaster. This drawing shows an altered composition to that of the finished work in pen and ink. Inspired by Byron's poem, Mazeppa, the artist depicts the army officer who is punished for an illicit love affair by being strapped naked to the back of a wild horse. He shows the moment when horse and rider, exhausted and near to death, are surrounded b y the rest of the wild herd. 'The sun was sinking - still I lay Chained to the still and stiffening steed, I thought to mingle there our clay, And my dim eyes of death had need.'
