Galloping horses, Painting

In 1900 the artist, Brian Hatton, completed a number of works which gained considerable praise including Carting Sand (watercolour), and Village Horse Fair (pencil). This work in watercolour/wash on paper was also completed in 1900. There are no human figures in this work which suggests that these are not wild ponies trying to escape capture. This could be interpreted as an image of joyfulness and freedom. The artist would have been familiar with herds of wild ponies in the countryside around Hereford and Swansea.
