Aethelred II penny, Coin

Silver penny of Aethelred II, minted by Leofgar of Hereford. On the obverse side the king is depicted facing left in armour and a radiate helmet, and the inscription EDELRED REX ANGL. On the reverse side is a long cross with each limb terminating in three crescents, over a small square with trefoils at each point, and the inscription LEOFGAR M-O HERE. Aethelred II (c968-1016), also known as The Unready, was King of the English from 978-1016. Hereford was granted the right to mint coins from King Athelstan (924-39) to Henry II (1216-1272).
