Carving

Carved oak panel from Millington Hall in Weobley which was probably a local administrative centre. The carving dates to around 1500 and may originally have been positioned over a door. The carving shows St Michael weighing the Virgin Mary’s rosary, and a merchant’s mark is carved on each side. The image of St Michael weighing the souls of the dead on their day of judgement became popular in the West from the 12th century. From the 14th century the Virgin and the rosary appeared in the imagery to show that piety could counter balance the devils in the other pan. This image from Weobley is unusual as it comes from a civic secular context, rather than from a church or other religious building. The imagery may have been associated with the merchants mark as a guild badge, or it may have had a symbolic function, either as a force of good or as a warning to traders and the community.
