The rainbow (unfinished), Painting

In 1906, the artist, Brian Hatton, left Oxford University and in August became a pupil at the art school, Spitalfields, in Arbroath. He was clearly aware of the artistic skills where he excelled, such as drawing and watercolour, and the areas where he needed support and guidance. He refers, in his letters, to his struggles with working in oils. Hatton went to study at Spitalfields determined to become skilled in the use of oils. This unfinished watercolour, The Rainbow, was created in 1906, possibly before he went to Arbroath. The unfinished nature of this piece allows us to observe his mastery of the medium and brings an added charm to this study of a horse and rider in a watery landscape and the sunshine through the rain.
