This sheet of pencil drawings is dated 1897. Brian Hatton, the artist, seized every opportunity to improve his skills and there are many records such as this in the collection. He sketched rapidly capturing a brief moment in time, animals in motion, at work or at play. Horses, dogs, cats, sheep and cattle are all carefully observed and the numerous pages of sketches show us not only the anatomical accuracy that Hatton demanded but also the humour, mischief, stubborness and exasperation that emerges when animals and man are in partnership.
