In 1907 Brian was at the Hospitalfields Art School in Arbroath where he was introduced to the technique of etching. He found it to be a dreadful messy business requiring an immense amount of paraphernalia, and he obviously didn't like it. There are four etchings in the collection representing his efforts, two of them depict a horse and rider in a landscape and the other two solitary figures, possibly influenced by the style of the French artist Millet. This one shows a shepherd carrying a faggot of wood on his back, driving his flock along a narrow lane, with his sheepdog at his side. He moves under a glowering cloud, looking back over his shoulder with an uncertain glance, whilst his sheep head towards the lighter horizon.
