Brian Hatton produced many drawings and paintings of the people he met working on the land or travellers moving through the county. In his earlier works the artist recorded in his drawings, a romanticised picture of life on the road, a life of variety and freedom, unfettered by the constraints of polite society. However, as he became an adult his works showed a sensitivity and an awareness of the hardship of life on the road. This pen and ink drawing was created in 1900 when the artist was thirteen years old. In these sketches we can identify the preparatory work and even the same models used in Gypsies on the Road and Out of Work.
