This scene was observed near the docks in Swansea and later recorded from memory. Brian's guardians in Swansea, Dr. and Mrs. Lancaster, accompanied him on outings specifically to find things to sketch. In the centre is a blacksmith shoeing a chestnut horse. The animal stands patiently as the blacksmith fits the shoe. The owner lounges against the wall watching. He is dressed in breeches, gaiters, cloth cap and neckchief. Within the forge two other men work at the fire and the anvil. This is a study of rich golden tones: the glowing chestnut horse, the red-brown brickwork and the flames reflected on the walls in the dark interior of the forge.
