This watercolour painting was created in 1906 when the artist, Brian Hatton, was aged nineteen. Here he records what must have been a makeshift or country technique of harrowing using branches lashed together. This is a very peaceful image of the harmony of man and beast working on the land. They will soon disappear beyond the skyline. A retrospective view of Hatton's work, may interpret this painting as signalling the change in the landscape as machinery replaced many of the tasks performed by man and horses. Many of these patient farm horses were to be requisitioned and sent to France in the First World War. The palette of soft colours reinforces this image of peace and tranquility on the edge of change.
