This enamelled mount for the end of a strap was probably used to fasten a book, reliquary or shrine. The fine cells contain traces of enamel in red and yellow, with silver overlay. The style of the decoration is in Irish tradition and dates to the 11th-12th centuries. The mount was found at Western-under-Penyard near Ross-on-Wye in south Herefordshire. The presence of an Irish style mount in this location implies a continued link between the Welsh and Irish church and highlights the connection of southern Herefordshire (Archenfield) with Wales. This connection began at the end of the Roman period and continued through the Anglian and Saxon periods into early Norman times.
