Wooden wheel recovered from the King’s Ditch in Gwynne Street, Hereford, in 1907, about 12 feet below the ground surface. It probably dates to c.1100, in the early Norman period and is made from oak. The old King’s Ditch was continuously wet as it drained water into the River Wye and may have lain along the original line of a small stream. Wood of this date rarely survives and it is entirely due to the wet burial conditions that this wheel has been preserved. A similar wheel was recovered from a nearby location in 1998 during the building works of the Left Bank Village
