This pencil drawing of his father was commended by the Royal Drawing Society in 1900 when the artist Brian Hatton was 13 years old. Alfred Hatton was married to Amelia Keays in 1884 and Brian, their first child, was born in 1887. Brian Hatton maintained a close relationship with his father until his death on active service in Egypt in 1916. Brian's letters to his father written throughout his army service affirm this strong father/son bond. In October 1915 the artist, Brian Hatton, was informed that he was to join a draft of officers going olverseas and he was to embark at Devonport on 12 October. He returned to Hereford to bid farewell to his family. He wrote to his grandmother from the train. 'I left Hereford at 3.37 a.m. this morning - Dad came down to see me off this morning like a good angel at that uncivilised hour.' They were destined never to meet again.
