Seated girl, Drawing

This charcoal drawing on grey paper, created in 1911, is simply titled, 'Seated Girl,' In 1911 the artist, Brian Hatton, was working from his studio in his father's house, Mount Craig , in Hereford. This graceful image of a young woman with bare shoulders and feet and loosely tied hair suggests this is a dancer. The artist frequently used family and close friends as models and an element of affection and intimacy is typical of these works. The relaxed pose suggests that the model was known to the artist and was perhaps the dancer, Lydia Bidmead, who Hatton married in 1914. This work is reminiscent of Edouard Degas and his intimate 'backstage' images of dancers in the theatres and opera houses of Paris.
