This pencil drawing on grey paper is dated 1912. The artist, Brian Hatton, had established a studio in London early in 1912. He shared the studio with Siordet, his friend from Oxford University. Most of his work at this time were portraits. It was not uncommon for artists at the beginning of their careers to be grateful for these commissions and Hatton was becoming an assured and popular portrait painter. However, he still found time to draw and paint landscapes and country life. It is possible that the model for this drawing was Beatrice Stewart, a professional model who appears in a number of Hatton's works dated 1912. She turns away from us, the audience, as she pulls the shawl closely around her head and shoulders. It may be that this drawing was intended for a particular theme or commission but it has more in common with Coster Girl, also dated 1912, than with the elegantly dressed women he was commissioned to paint at this time."
