This portrait, in oils on board, is of Brian Hatton's sister, Ailsa Marr Hatton who was born in 1893. This painting, dated 1907, was created in 1907 when Ailsa Marr was fourteen years old and the artist, her brother Brian Hatton, was twenty-one. He completed a number of beautiful finished drawings and paintings of both of his sisters. This is a very intimate portrait of Ailsa Marr with a pensive gaze, her hair loose on her shoulders. This painting is suffused with golden light which is typical of the other oil portraits of his sisters. (see Playing With Draughts 1975-7/18 and Ailsa and Marjorie Hatton with Racquet 1975-7/28). This effect may have been created by the type of lighting used at that time but it is also possible that this golden light captured a moment in time, the harmony, comfort and prosperity of the family home in Hereford.
