This pen and ink drawing, created in 1911, has no title other than 'Book Illustration.' In 1911 the artist, Brian Hatton, was seeking commissions and working from his studio at home, in Hereford, at Mount Craig. This may have been a preliminary piece submitted prior to a commission for a series of drawings. There were disappointments when commissions came to nothing after hours of preliminary work. This drawing shows a very large man, somewhat the 'worse for wear' being carried, 'piggy-back,' by a monk or friar who is bent double under the weight. The friar wears a rosary at his belt and the other figure holds a rosary in his hand. A disapproving elderly woman, holding a lantern, is closing a door as she ushers them from what appears to be a monastry or ecclesiastical building. This is possibly an illustration from 'The Friar's Tale' from 'The Canterbury Tales,' of Chaucer. Inscription on on the frame: Given to Marjorie Hatton by Mrs A.B.Ritchie, sister of Gerald Siordet, 1947. Siordet was the artist's friend from his time at Oxford. Siordet also died in the First World War.
