Sintram meeting Death, Drawing
Click on an image for a larger view.
This drawing was inspired the book by Freidrich de la Motte Fouque, 'Sintram and his Companions'. There are four tales each represent ing one of the four seasons. The stern, grave 'Sintram', is likened to winter. When he was a child the artist, Brian Hatton, loved to read and illustrate the tales of Sir Walter Scott and Tennyson. In 1902 he created a large and very colourful pastel drawing, 'A Border Raid.' 'Sintram Meeting Death' is a much more sombre work executed in black and white chalk on paper. The rearing horse is one of the artist's favourite themes which can also be seen in 'Rearing Horses,' 1910, and in the earlier piece,'The Tournament' 1899. The model for dog in this drawing may be Spring, the lurcher, which Hatton purchased when he was living in Eywas Harold in 1905..
