Hippolytus, Drawing

This pen and ink drawing was created in 1908 when the artist was twenty years old. His studies in Arbroath had come to an end and his trip to Egypt with the Flinders Petrie archaeological expedition was to take place at the end of the year. The spring and summer months were spent in London where he joined Professor Lantieri's modelling classes and in Hereford at Mount Craig where he set up his studio in the coach-house. This drawing is based on the Greek myth of Hippolytus, who was dragged to his death when the wild horses pulling his chariot bolted. It is possible that this work was part of a commision from Miss MacDonald who was one of the trustees at Spitalfields. The commision was to create illustrations of a classical nature destined to appear on a calender sold to raise money for charity. Brian Hatton was still corresponding with Miss MacDonald in 1908.
