This simple image in pastel was created in 1912 when the artist Brian Hatton was 25 years old. He was often able to persuade the local traveller families to model for him. This portrait does not seek to idealise life on the road but neither does he, in this portrait, dwell on its harshness. He has captured a wistfulness, simple beauty and dignity even though she is not adorned with the elegant gowns and hats of his other sitters.
