The inspiration for the Study of a Head, in oils on board, created in 1908 is generally acknowledged to be the story of Jacob and his son Joseph. This was one of the artist's favourite themes and three further works, created in 1910 and 1912 are also derived from this Biblical history. Head of Joseph, in charcoal and white chalk, 1912, shows a bearded man, with his head sunk on his chest in grief. Two further works , Jacob with Joseph's Coat, in oils, 1912 and The Coat of Many Colours, pastel drawing, 1910, both show a seated man with Joseph's brightly coloured coat spread across his knees. The upper part of the figure is in shadow but the lower part of the figure and the richly coloured coat, are illuminated by the light streaming through the door of Jacob's tent.
