Ox-bells, Horse harness bells

An unusal set of ten Robert Wells bells mounted on an elaborately decorated wrought iron frame. They were found in Herefordshire and most probably were mounted on a wagon as they were too heavy to be carried by an individual horse. They would have fulfilled the same purpose as a set of team bells carried by the horses - i.e. to give warning of the approach of the wagon and team on the narrow roadways. It has been suggested that they could have been mounted on an Ox yoke, but when even divided between two animals, the weight would have been overpowering.
