Rotten Row, Sunday Morning in the park, Painting

Rotten Row is on the south side of Hyde Park in London. It is where riders could exercise their horses and it was also used by guards regiments for the same purpose. On fine days spectators would gather to enjoy the park, to meet friends and to enjoy the parade of horses exercising in the sunshine. In the summer of 1914 Brian Hatton painted 'Sunday Morning in the Park.' This small oil painting is clearly derivitive of the work of the French Impressionist painters . This is a study of sunlight through the trees with a sun splashed pathway in the foreground drawing us towards the horses and riders in the middleground.. The smartly dressed spectators, who are largely in shadow, are gazing towards the sunlight and the horses going by.
