This pastel drawing was created in 1909 when the artist, Brian Hatton, was twenty two years old. His mother, Amelia Hatton, died in July 1909 and it is likely that this was one of the first works to be completed after her death. Brian Hatton had a very close relationship with his mother who recognised and nurtured his artistic potential from when he was a child. The countryside and those who worked on the land was one of his favourite subjects. The farms and fields around Warham, near to the family home in Broomy Hill were a rich source of subject matter. This pastel drawing is a fine example of the artist's skill in creating images of animals in motion, going about their work.
