Haymaking, Painting

The artist, Brian Hatton, produced 'Haymaking,' in 1895 when he was eight years old. He was to spend the next four years living with his family in Hereford, roaming the countryside, observing and recording the changing seasons and the lives of those who worked on the land. The inscription on the reverse of this painting records that this was his first work in oils, created when he was eight and a half years old. From this accurate record of his age we can deduce that 'Haymaking' was painted in the wintertime making use of sketches and watercolours from the summer months spent in the Herefordshire countryside. There are few works in oils from these early years. Brian Hatton was critical of his own ability in the use of oil paints which is why, much later, in 1906 he went to Hospitalfields art school in Arbroath. This small painting gives an accurate record of harvestime at the end of the nineteenth century. The artist has produced an idyllic scene with with fresh clear skies and glowing fields.
