This rural scene, in watercolour, was painted in 1903, when the artist was sixteen years old. On 4th August 1903 the artist G.F.Watts who showed a keen interst in Brian's Hatton's development, predicted a bright future. He wrote the following words to Mrs Hatton: 'I want Brian to take a greater position than any English artist can claim, for I know it has been given to himto raise the English School of art to a point it has not yet reached.' Brian Hatton was at this time becoming aware that he needed to develop his skills using oil paint. 'I don't seem to be able mix the colours so well to do what I want' This watercolour painting, Harrowing, shows that he was very comfortable in, what was, at this stage of his development, his preferred medium. This work shows man and animals in harmony with nature. They are soon to be replaced by industrialised methods in agriculture. The painting emphises the beauty of the Herefordshire landscape, before industrialisation.
