This 18th century woman's stays (or corset) is made of canvas and whalebone. Strips of whalebone were inserted to give the corset and its wearer the desired shape. Under the arms, the corset is reinforced with white kid leather to protect the wearer's dress from sweat stains and rotting. At some stage, cotton canvas inserts were put in the sides to enlarge the corset.
