This woman's 'sack back' dress has two pieces: an open robe and an underskirt. It was made in about 1770-1775 from material woven at Spitalfields in London. The pattern of the embroidery consists of red, green, yellow, pink and brown flowers woven onto a cream damask. Underneath this dress the woman would have worn a corset, a chemise, a petticoat and a pair of panniers or false hips to excentuate her hips.
