Fan

This is a woman's fan was made in around 1791 to 1795. It is printed in black, red nd green with the canal route from Hereford to Gloucester. The following has been inscribed by hand: 'Plan of the intended Navigable Canal from Hereford to Gloucester with a Collateral Branch at Newent.' It has been suggested that the fan was given to the female relatives of the company's shareholders as a souvenir. An act of Parliament in 1791 made possible the building of the Hereford Gloucester Canal. The Gloucester to Ledbury portion of the canal was opened in 1798 and the Ledbury to Hereford portion was opened in 1845. It was soon made obsolete, however, by the building of railways in Herefordshire and the canal was closed in 1881.
