This pair of women's shoes come from China and date to the late 19th century and early 20th century. They are made from woven satin with embroidered decoration in coloured silks. The uppers have a lilac ground and the decoration is in red, orange, green, yellow and silver threadwork. They have a platform heel known as a choppin which is made from wood, covered in white leather with a rope sole. This style of shoe was worn by Manchu women in China. This particular pair belonged to the wife of Viceroy Ti of the Canton Province.
