Lapworthura miltoni (Salter), ophiurida (brittle-star)
A fossil brittle star specimen found at Church Hill, Leintwardine by The Revd Crouch. From the Leintwardine Beds of the Ludlow formation, Silurian in age. The specimen was originally classifed as 'Sturzaster marstoni' after Alfred Marston of Ludlow, but has been re-classified as 'Lapworthura miltoni' This area was a submarine canyon dropping away from the continental shelf in late Silurian times. Animals living on the continental shelf were swept into the canyon in underwater mudslides and then very quickly buried, allowing excellent preservation of delicate and fragile creatures such as starfish and brittle stars.
