This small oil painting of two horses, one grey and one bay, in a field is undated and is described as unfinished. . However, the unfinished nature of this preliminary sketch, in oils, gives us the opportunity to observe Brian Hatton'svigorous brushwork. He excelled at capturing the fluid movement of horses and although in this painting the two horses are not moving they seem to be poised on the edge of flight. The mane of the grey and the tail of the bay horse are buffeted by the wind and the brushstokes suggest that these two animals are moments from flight. Throughout his life the artist created images of horses and it emerges as one of his favourite themes. From 1898 - 1902 he produced numerous images of wild ponies, scenes from the hunt and from the racecourse. His favoured medium at this time, however, was pencil or pen and ink or watercolour so the use of oils may suggest that this is a later work. However, see Runaway Horse, 1900 a study in oils.
