Strap end
Click on an image for a larger view.
This small chape for a narrow belt or strap has a forked end for use as a nail cleaner. Importantly it is finely engraved with a motif of a Peacock on the left and the Tree of Life in the centre. These were two symbols of Christianity in the later Roman period. It was found at Kenchester, Magnis, in 1961 and is the first evidence in Herefordshire for early Christianity, a religion introduced as the state religion by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in the early 4th century. Christianity endured in this area through the post-Roman Anglo-Saxon period
